How would you proceed when optimizing a saw blade? Or in the case of technical systems where there is a large scatter in the production or where complicated interactions occur? What would be your first steps?
The task of engineers is to develop products in such a way that they fulfill a specific function. The challenge here is to realize functions, but to be able to realize them exclusively through the shape, i.e. the forms, tolerances and material properties. In addition, when optimizing a system, for example a saw blade, the problem must first be understood in order to derive the shape. For this, engineers resort to different testing strategies. Our goal is to be able to investigate the approaches to testing.

Task:

Your task is to apply different testing strategies to the analysis of an example system. A possible example system is the Pine Wood Derby vehicle. An essential part of your work will be to test using rapid prototyping. Hypotheses for optimizing the example system are to be generated based on the knowledge thus gained. The optimized system is to be manufactured and tested using rapid prototyping. Our prototype workshop with laser cutter and 3D printer is available as a test environment. In a subsequent step, an experimental study is to be built and implemented in an online tool.
