Die frühe Phase eines Produktentwicklungsprozesses ist dadurch charakterisiert, dass die Anzahl, Härte und Reife von lösungsbestimmenden Anforderungen noch gering ausgeprägt und noch wenige Eigenschaften der letztendlichen Lösung festgelegt sind. „Es gilt das Paradox der Konstruktion: Früh kann man viel bewegen, aber man kennt die Auswirkungen kaum. Später kann man leicht beurteilen, aber kaum mehr ändern.“ [Grabowski 1997]
Die Frühe Phase, nach dem Modell der PGE - Produktgenerationsentwicklung, ist eine Phase im Entwicklungsprozess einer neuen Produktgeneration, die mit der Initiierung eines Projektes beginnt und mit der Bewertung einer Produktspezifikation endet. Die Produktspezifikation enthält u. a. Informationen bzgl. der verwendeten Technologien und Subsysteme sowie deren Übernahme- und Neuentwicklungsanteile. Sie ermöglicht eine valide Bewertung des zu entwickelnden Produkts hinsichtlich der relevanten Parameter wie beispielsweise der Produzierbarkeit, der notwendigen Ressourcen sowie des technischen und ökonomischen Risikos.

The early stage in a specific product engineering project addresses the time range between the trigger for or initiation of an engineering project to the formulation of a first (strategic) product specification. This implies no exact sequence of engineering activities, but serves to delimit the stage from later project stages in order to address a cumulative appearance of characteristic aspects of early stages (e.g. high uncertainty).
The early stage according to the description model of product generation engineering is a stage in the development process of a new product generation. It starts with the initiation of a project and ends with an evaluation of a product specification. This specification includes i. a. information concerning the applied technology and subsystems as well as their share of carryover and new development. The specification allows a valid evaluation of the planned product regarding relevant parameters such as manufacturability, necessary resources and the technical and economic risk.
