Die Produktentstehung ist Teil des Produktlebenszyklus und beschreibt den grundsätzlichen Ablauf von der Produkt- bzw. Geschäftsidee bis zum Serienanlauf (Abbildung). Sie umfasst die drei Hauptaufgabenbereiche strategische Produktplanung, Produktentwicklung und Produktionssystementwicklung.

Product engineering is part of the product life cycle and describes the basic process from the product or business idea to the start of production (figure). It comprises the three main task areas strategic product planning, product development and production system development.
