Referenzprodukte sind bestehende Produkte (z. B. Vorgänger- oder Wettbewerbsprodukte), auf deren Basis neue Systemgenerationen entwickelt werden. Dazu werden teilweise deren Struktur und Teilsysteme übernommen oder als Ausgangspunkt für Variationen zugrunde gelegt.
Unter Struktur wird hierbei beispielsweise die Funktionsstruktur und Baustruktur verstanden. Die Teilsysteme können sowohl aus Ziel- (z.B. Produktprofil, Anforderungen und Grenzwerte) als auch Objektsystem (z.B. Lösungsprinzipien und Gestalt) stammen. Die Entwicklung einer neuen Systemgeneration auf der Basis von Referenzprodukten erlaubt damit die Wiederverwendung von bereits vorhandenen Teilsystemen und verfügbarem Wissen.
Zur konkretisierten Beschreibung und Modellierung von Referenzprodukt-Bestandteilen, die als Grundlage und Ausgangspunkt für die Entwicklung einer neuen Produktgeneration relevant sind, wurde das Referenzsystem als Modellelement im Modell der PGE eingeführt.
Damit wurde unter anderem berücksichtigt, dass mitunter nur Teile von Referenzprodukten für die Entwicklung einer neuen Produktgeneration relevant sind, relevante Grundlage prinzipiell aus mehreren vorhandenen Systemen kommen können und dass es sich dabei nicht immer um Produkte handeln muss, die bereits am Markt erhältlich sind.

Reference products are existing products (eg predecessor or competitor products), on the basis of which new system generations are developed. To this end, their structure and subsystems are partly carried over or used as a starting point for variations.
The term structure here is, for example, the functional structure and building structure. The subsystems may come from both the system of objectives (e.g., product profile, requirements, and limits), as well as system of objects (e.g. principle solutions and embodiment). The development of a new system generation on the basis of reference products thus allows the re-use of existing subsystems and available knowledge.
For the concrete description and modelling of reference product components, which are relevant as a basis and starting point for the development of a new product generation, the reference system was introduced as a model element in the PGE model.
This took into account, among other things, that sometimes only parts of reference products are relevant for the development of a new product generation, that relevant bases can in principle come from several existing systems and that these systems do not always have to be products already available on the market.
