Das iPeM ist ein generisches Metamodell, das die relevanten Elemente zur Ableitung von situationsspezifischen Produktentwicklungsprozessmodellen umfasst. Das iPeM basiert auf dem Systemtripel der Produktentwicklung: Es beschreibt die Produktentwicklung als eine kontinuierliche Interaktion des Systems der Ziele, des Systems der Objekte und des Handlungssystems.
