Systematic Literature Review on the Effects of Different Tribosystem Components on Wet-Running Friction Systems

Topic Description:

Wet clutches and brakes are essential machine components used particularly in high-power and high-torque drive systems. The interaction between the friction lining, the counterface, the environment, and the lubricant gives rise to complex tribological processes that significantly influence friction behavior, power loss, and service life. Due to current developments in the automotive sector and specifically the Euro 7 directive, wet-running friction systems are rapidly gaining attention. Current challenges include the trade-off between adequate cooling and low drag losses or vibration characteristics. In addition, operating conditions such as rotational speed, temperature, and contact pressure, as well as the properties of the friction material and lubricant, can significantly influence system behavior. The objective of this thesis is to use a systematic literature review to assess and summarize the current state of science and technology regarding wet-running clutches and brakes in order to identify relevant influencing factors, current challenges, and existing research gaps.

Task:

As part of this thesis, a systematic literature review will be conducted on the effects of various types of friction plates, steel plates, and fluids in brake or clutch systems. Key criteria include, for example, the effects on thermal behavior, vibration behavior, and drag losses. Relevant scientific publications, standards, and technical reports must be identified, reviewed, and evaluated in a structured manner. The findings will then be summarized and systematically organized with regard to the influencing factors and boundary conditions involved. Specifically, the thesis comprises the following steps:

  • Familiarization with the topic of wet-running friction systems and their various operating conditions
  • Definition of a suitable search strategy and selection of relevant databases and sources
  • Systematic research and review of relevant literature
  • Structured evaluation and categorization of the sources found
  • Identification and summary of relevant factors and boundary conditions
  • Supporting studies aimed at optimizing friction systems

Profile:

  • Current enrollment in an engineering program
  • Ability to work independently and in a structured manner
  • Willingness to learn and a commitment to the role
  • Good understanding of German and English

The experience and prior knowledge listed above are not mandatory requirements and can be offset by a willingness to learn and a commitment to the job. However, they are helpful for a quick and smooth transition into the role.
