NVH - Noise, Vibration, Harshness

Whether emotional attachment, nervous strain or physical damage to subsystems, the vibration and comfort behaviour has a considerable influence on the development, operation and sale of a product. Be it a vehicle or a hand-held work tool. Increasingly strict legal limits and new drive concepts require constant adaptation to new problems. On the one hand, it is important to have the necessary vibroacoustic measuring methods, techniques and environments at your disposal and to master them. On the other hand, it is also necessary to have the methods and know-how to transfer the findings of the measurements into a valid solution.

The IPEK - Institute of Product Development can support you on the whole way from problem definition to solution generation. For the analysis process from the component to the complete vehicle system, the acoustic roller test bench (ARP) of the IPEK, for example, fulfils the necessary criteria for different measurement methods such as:

  • Virtual pass-by measurement
  • Sound intensity measurements of subsystems and components
  • Transfer path analysis from the component to the driver's pipe
  • Binaural dummy head measurements for the acquisition of interior acoustics
  • 3D laser scanning vibrometry for detection of surface vibrations

These measurement methods can be transferred into individual / adapted measurement procedures as well as evaluation and assessment procedures in cooperation with the project partner. The driving robot enables an automated maneuver-based testing with a very high repeatability. This problem-oriented approach allows statements to be made at the end of the project as to whether the effects are system-specific, phenomena-specific or test bench-specific and how these can be incorporated into the synthesis of a solution for future validation methods or for future product generations.

The research work of the IPEK focuses on the investigation of the causes, the modes of action and the avoidance of comfort relevant vibrations as well as their evaluation. Problems are always considered systemically, i.e. the subsystem is regarded as part of the overall system and must also be validated within the framework of the resulting boundary conditions. This means, for example, that not only the interactions of a component with the entire powertrain must be considered, but also how these interactions in turn change the vehicle behavior and thus the driving comfort perceived by the driver. It is precisely this interaction via the human-machine interfaces, as well as the transmission paths behind them, that is decisive for the analysis and understanding of NVH or system behavior in general.
