  • Density-based topology optimization is a standard method for the targeted generation of an initial design proposal for components. The method is used in particular in the early phase of product development. Up to now, commercially available optimization tools have only offered the possibility of performing single-material optimization. In the context of lightweight construction, it has been shown that multi-material structures offer enormous potential that cannot be exploited with single-material topology optimization. However, density-based approaches for multi-material topology optimization do exist in research.
