Development of an automatic image recognition system for the evaluation of particulate matter emissions from electric vehicles

Brake systems are one of the most important safety components in a vehicle. Wear particles are released from the friction system during every braking process. These particles are harmful to health and also pose a risk to surrounding technical systems. In order to investigate the mechanisms behind wear particle formation, a particle extraction system was added to the TRP - dry friction test rig (see Fig. center).

Task:

The aim of the work is to develop a method for optical evaluation of the wear particles. For this purpose, images of the collected wear particles are taken on the digital microscope and characteristic values such as the number of particles are automatically evaluated in MATLAB using image recognition methods.

Profile:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics and information technology or similar field of study.

  • Independent and reliable way of working
